Exploring my Firsts: From Powai to Kalyan

MBA – the three big words that lay so much weight that they have the power to change lives. After converting our BITSoM admissions, each and every one of us was nervous and perplexed about what lay ahead. The stress of finishing off our pre-MBA Harvard business school courses and packing our bags for the journey ahead only took the excitement to another level. Then there was a series of “firsts” that we went through. The first walk through the RH hostel gates, the first time meeting your Roommates, the first class, the first time experiencing Mumbai rains, and many more. Through the coming months, little by little, we went from this first-time nervousness to an all-time comfort, and we made BITSoM, along with all its people, our home.
Till now, we were at the interim campus of BITSoM in Powai. The thing about “interim” things is that there is always something more to look forward to. Interim it may be, it was our home that we all lay comfortable in. BUT legacy is neither made in interim walls nor in comfort. It’s made under a solid roof of consistent permanence. Therefore, we left our “home cum hostels” for a second time and traveled two hours to reach our brand new massive 60-acre campus in Kalyan.
Again, we went through a series of firsts here but with familiar faces all around us. The first time our luggage-laden busses crossed our campus gates, we were mesmerized by the beauty of it all. The lavish green garden in front of all the glass exterior buildings seemed royal under the clear blue sky. This was just the royal welcome we were waiting for, but we weren’t prepared for what awaited us further. As we got down from our busses we were guided to the cafeteria where we got to experience the mouthwatering yet healthy food by TAJ catering. Every day since, food is one thing, not just students but admin included, cannot stop thinking about. We experience delicacies from around the world, like Intercontinental, Lebanese, etc, but we are also connected with our roots when we are served dishes from Maharashtra, Bengal, Kerala, etc.
We were allotted hostel rooms next (with attached bathrooms! Thank God), where each and every one of us had our own rooms, which we all decorated according to our preferences and likings. We were introduced to the buildings and the many activity areas allotted to us. We have study rooms, podcast rooms, video rooms, a common area, an incubation space, etc. So many rooms that students can make use of. We also have a lot of indoor and outdoor sports facilities with sports like badminton, volleyball, pickle ball, padel ball, all of which come well equipped. There’s also a games room and a well-furnished gym, which I’m guilty of skipping. If you ask me what my favourite spot on the whole campus is, it’s the library. The peaceful, serene library has a magnanimous view of hills all around.
Slowly and steadily, we have embraced Kalyan and made it our home too. MBA does that to you. It makes you comfortable with change. We have accepted this place just like the place, and the smile-laden faces we meet here every day have accepted us, and thus the legacy of BITSoM will be written here.
