Shailendra Pratap Jain (Shelly) is Bret Wheat Endowed Professor of Marketing and International Business at the Foster School of Business, University of Washington, Seattle. He has held faculty positions earlier at Kelley School of Business, Indiana University and Simon School of Business, University of Rochester. Shelly has been a visiting faculty at Johnson School at Cornell University, Judge School at Cambridge University, Ivey School, University of Western Ontario, IIM Ahmedabad, Indian School of Business, and Skolkovo School (Moscow).Shelly’s research interests include Brand Strategy, Psychological Segmentation, Consumer Addictions, Advertising, Consumer Psychology of COVID, Consumer Psychology of Artificial Intelligence, Health Care Messaging, Indulgent Consumption, Materialism, Motivational and Individual Differences (Self-regulation, Culture, Self-Construal, Lay/Implicit Theories) in responses to marketing stimuli, Political Ideology, Psychology of Donation, Scarcity, and Consumer Emotions. One of his latest projects is a book he is co-writing on brand crises. Shelly has published close to 50 papers and his research has been published in leading journals like Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Marketing Research, Marketing Science, Journal of Consumer Psychology, and Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science. He is an Associate/Area Editor with Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Consumer Psychology, and Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, and was an AE with International Journal of Research in Marketing. Shelly has co-edited a volume of the Journal of the Association for Consumer Research on Addiction and Maladaptive Consumption and is co-editing a special issue of Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science on scarcity. He has co-chaired the Annual conferences of Society for Consumer Psychology (North America), and Advances in Consumer Research (Asia Pacific). Shelly has been invited to present his research at over 40 universities globally and has won multiple teaching awards, been cited as a 4-star teacher by Business Week and has conducted executive education programs for several companies in Asia, Europe, and the US.He has a chemical engineering undergraduate degree from BITS Pilani, an MBA from IIM Ahmedabad, and an M. Phil. and a Ph.D. in Marketing from New York University. Prior to moving to the US to do his PhD, Shelly worked for United Breweries, FCB Ulka, and Mudra Communications in India.
